I shared this tomato basil fruit salad on my Instagram the other day and wanted to get it up on the blog so it doesn’t get lost in the interwebs….
In the post I said… Something I’ve learned: Kids will eat anything if they can pick it out of the dirt. And they’re more likely to eat the dish the thing from the dirt is going into too. Also, they’ll eat a salad if it doesn’t contain lettuce…
I feel like my life right now is a game of “will they eat it”….
With each turn I learn a trick about how to present the options, the food itself and handle the “I don’t yike it” reactions.
I love being able to share the stories and hear yours too. Between us we’ve got it figured out… sort of… until we don’t, which will be tomorrow. Ya know what I mean?
So when I make something spontaneously that is a hit… that actually inspires an eating contest of who can finish what’s left in the serving bowl first… And that looks downright gorgeous too… I want to shout it from the rooftops.
This was one of those shout it from the rooftop dishes.
It might have been that the majority of the dish is fruit…
Or maybe it was that they got to pick the basil out of the dirt and eat it…
Either way, it worked. And I will be making it again. And I thought you may want to try it too.

I love this fruit salad scooped on top of a piece of salmon. It would be just as great on top of grilled chicken too. For the kids, I served it on the side… cause you know,… touching.
Leftovers, if you manage to save any, are great the next day tossed into a salad.
Even though it’s a fruit salad, it could make a fun different sort of dip with your fav tortilla chips.
Tomato Basil Fruit Salad
- 1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved (see time saving tip below!)
- 1 mango or large peach, diced
- 2-3 plums, diced
- ⅛ cup red onion, diced
- basil, torn
- ½ lemon, squeezed
- 1 tbsp EVOO, drizzled
- sea salt
- black pepper
- Combine everything in a bowl, dress to taste and stir to mix well. Goes great on top of grilled salmon or chicken. Also makes a tasty dip with your fav tortilla chips.
- Note: This could be made with different fruits too, like peaches, apples or watermelon.
